The Benefits of ECVET

IN THIS ARTICLE, WE CONSIDER THE BENEFITS OF ECVET FOR LEARNERS AND VET INSTITUTIONS / PRACTITIONERS.

BENEFITS FOR LEARNERS:

  • Tangible outcomes that relate to an existing VET programme or qualification can make mobility programmes more attractive to learners;
  • Formal recognition of learning acquired during a mobility period abroad means that learners may no longer have to repeat or catch-up on missed units or elements of learning on their return;
  • Quality-assured and well-documented learning, following the principles of ECVET, means learners are better positioned to present newly- or additionally-acquired skills to employers.

BENEFITS FOR VET INSTITUTIONS / PRACTITIONERS:

  • ECVET allows for improved design and enhanced quality assurance in the delivery of mobility programmes, especially through the use of (units of) learning outcomes;
  • More productive long-term partnerships can be developed with overseas partners, facilitating increased learner participation and improved learning delivery and recognition;
  • VET practitioners can learn from their peers in other European countries, enhancing programme design, learning delivery and assessment at the home institution.

POINTS TO NOTE

The use of one or more
ECVET principles can lead
to a more fruitful mobility
experience for learners
and a more beneficial
relationship between
partner institutions.

ECVET requires a higher
level of commitment
from partner institutions
if it is to be employed
fully and effectively.

ECVET does not address
all possible obstacles
associated with
geographical mobility
(e.g. language barriers).

Offering mobility
programmes based on
ECVET principles can be
valuable when marketing
programmes and
qualifications.
